From January 7–9, the Mississippi Urban League partnered with M.E.S.S. Ministries and Lutheran Disaster Response to host a Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual Support training in Jackson. We are grateful for these partners and proud of our own Ida Patterson, Program Manager of Disaster Recovery, who served as a M.E.S.S. trainer, helping to build care and resilience across Mississippi.

The Mississippi Urban League is proud to support families across Sharkey County, Durant, and Tallahatchie County through the distribution of essential baby items provided by our generous partnership with Baby2Baby.

Following recent winter weather impacts, many families faced unexpected challenges — from power outages to limited access to supplies. During times like these, essentials such as diapers, wipes, formula, hygiene kits, baby wash, and shampoo are not just helpful — they are critical.

For households already navigating economic hardship, winter emergencies can create added strain. By ensuring parents have access to basic necessities for their babies, we help relieve stress, protect the health and safety of children, and strengthen community resilience.

At the Mississippi Urban League, we remain Rooted in Purpose — committed to meeting immediate needs while building stronger, more prepared communities.

Together, we continue to serve, support, and stand with Mississippi families.

Roof Repair Project

The Mississippi Urban League, in partnership with PriorityOne Bank , recently completed home repairs for eight families whose roofs were damaged during recent storms. This impactful project, totaling $120,000, provided much-needed relief and stability for the affected households.

The Mississippi Urban League extends its sincere gratitude to John Price of PriorityOne Bank, Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas, David Collins, the project inspector, and Daniel Santos of D.A.S. Home Repair LLC for their outstanding work and dedication in completing this project.

Together, we are helping families rebuild and strengthening our community—one home at a time.

A huge shoutout to our amazing vendors and partners — Red Cross, MEMA, Saint Vincent de Paul, Mississippi Center for Justice (Heirs Property), ICNA Relief, Bolivar County Fire Department, Marion Counseling, North MS Storm Chasers, Mennonite Disaster Services, Mississippi Department of Health Breast & Cervical Cancer Program — for their support.

We also appreciate all the volunteers and community members who attended and made this event a great success.

Clean JXN Gateway Beautification Day

Vice President Wilburn Smith joined fellow volunteers for "Clean JXN Gateway Beautification Day", an inaugural program launched by the City of Jackson focusing on removing litter and debris from major entryways, including West Capitol Street, Woodrow Wilson Avenue, Fortification Street, High Street, Pearl Street, and Pascagoula Street. Thank you, Lee and Wilbur, for your commitment to making the city's gateways more welcoming. Their hands-on work demonstrates community leadership and shows that we build a stronger, cleaner, and more connected Jackson when we all take pride in our neighborhoods.

We offer our sincerest gratitude to the Urban League of the State of Arkansas for hosting Ida Patterson, Program Manager at the Mississippi Urban League, for a recent best practice sharing site visit. This visit included attendance at an event held as part of the organization's "Steps to Success Financial Literacy Series" , an inspiring program that focuses on empowering young adults through financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and housing. During the visit, there was also an opportunity to enjoy Little Rock’s rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality, making the experience both educational and memorable.

Collaborations like these strengthen the Urban League Movement — connecting affiliates, sharing strategies, and building collective impact across communities.
